Awful Phillies All-Star Game Moments of Awfulness

When the Phillies learned that they would be hosting the 1996 MLB All-Star Game, the club looked like it was on its way to some great things -- it was September 1993, the Phillies were on their way to a National League East Championship (and eventually a league pennant), the fanbase was whipped into a frenzy over the lovable "Macho Row" heroes who made baseball relevant after 10 years spent mostly in the second division.

But, as Yeats says, things fall apart, especially when those "things" are mid-level starting pitchers given ridiculous workloads by a masochistic manager, reckless, hard-living star players, and a front office that was convinced that its lightning-in-a-bottle success in 1993 could be sustained.

The 1996 Phillies would stumble into the All-Star Break with a 37-49 record, thanks in large part to a dreadful 6-21 record in June. National League Manager Bobby Cox selected just one Phillie to represent the host team -- relief pitcher Ricky Bottalico. And really, he may have been the most deserving. Add in the fact that Veterans Stadium was and would remain one of the game's true hellholes, and you have a truly embarrassing host city situation.  Other incredibly lame factors: A U.S. National Anthem sung by Frasier star Kelsey Grammer; Canadian National Anthem presented by Sarah McLachlan I hate you so much for showing those sad puppies on TV; and vile former Phillie and U.S. Senator Jim Bunning taking part in the first pitch ceremonies.  Click here to view the broadcast opening, if the sanctimonious twit Bob Costas is what you crave.

Bottalico would pitch a scoreless fifth inning en route to a 6-0 National League victory, the National League's last win until their 2010 triumph.

The game's real star, though, was Mike Piazza, Phoenixville native and Dodgers representative. Piazza smashed a huge home run into Veteran Stadium's upper deck in the second inning off Charles Nagy. Seeing the hometown kid rub it in the city's face was a truly upsetting thing, and was a harbinger of things to come once the catcher would join the Mets later in the decade.

The Phillies have not hosted the Midsummer Classic since, and you have to figure they'll have to wait a least a few more years until its their turn again, despite a new ballpark and a thriving baseball scene. Of course, the way these things go, we'll be back in the dumps, young reliever Trevor May will be the sole representative of the Phillies, and local boy Mike Trout will really make the city look on with longing. Negadelphianism dies hard.

1959 All-Star Game: Don Drysdale Starts In L.A.

Today's Dodgers All-Star memory brings us back to 1959. It was the Dodgers' second year in Los Angeles, and they were hosting the All-Star Game. Well, the second one anyway. As you may remember from the Maury Wills post from earlier this week, MLB held two All-Star Games from 1959 to 1962 as a way to raise money for the players pension fund. The first game was on July 7 at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, but the baseball world descended upon the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on August 3.

At the time of the second All-Star Game in 1959, the Dodgers were 60-47, a fine turnaround from their seventh place finish the season before. They were a half-game behind the Giants for first place, and would battle down to the wire with the Braves, who were just a game out at the time. Don Drysdale in 1959 was a few months younger than Clayton Kershaw is this year, and was 14-6 with a 2.89 ERA at the time of the All-Star Game in LA. Drysdale, who started the first All-Star Game in Pittsburgh a month earlier, also started in his home park.

Wally Moon of the Dodgers started as well, batting seventh and playing left field. He went 0-for-2 with two walks. Jim Gilliam was also named to the team, for the second time in his career, and he hit a home run in the seventh inning off Billy O'Dell. The other Dodgers home All-Star was Charlie Neal, who went 0-for-1, saving his heroics for the World Series later that year, when he hit .370 with two doubles and two home runs in the Dodgers' six-game win over the White Sox.

As for Drysdale, he didn't allow a hit in his three scoreless innings in the Pittsburgh All-Star game in July, but he didn't fare as well in the Coliseum. Drysdale had five strikeouts in his three innings, one more than he had in Pittsburgh, but he also allowed three runs. Frank Malzone hit a solo home run in the second inning, and Yogi Berra knocked in Nellie Fox with a two-run shot in the third inning. The American League went on to win 5-3, and Drysdale got hung with the loss.

Drysdale would go on to pitch in nine All-Star games in his career, including five starts, tied with Lefty Grove and Robin Roberts for the most ever. Drysdale's 19 strikeouts and 19 1/3 innings pitched are the most in All-Star history by anyone.

Look out, he's a cycle-path: Driver rams rider into barbed wire during Tour de France

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Caught up: Johnny Hoogerland, right, is tangled in barbed-wire after he crashed at the side of the road with Spain's Juan Antonio Flecha, left

Their hopes of cycling victory were left in tatters - just like their ripped jerseys.

Two Tour de France riders were knocked off their bikes yesterday with one sent hurtling into a barbed wire fence.

Spanish rider Juan Antonio Flecha and Dutchman Johnny Hoogerland were racing through the French countryside when the TV car came alongside them.

Painful: Deep lacerations on Hoogerland's leg and buttock from the barbed wire fence. His cycling costume was shredded but thankfully he was able to change into a new one

The vehicle, belonging to TV station France 2, veered suddenly to its right as it passed a group of five cyclists along a narrow country road just 22 miles from the finish of a stage.

As it did so, Team Sky rider Flecha was sent tumbling to the ground, colliding with Hoogerland and catapulting him into the wire, causing ugly lacerations to his skin.

Both men eventually remounted their bikes and continued riding - with shredded jerseys and blood pouring from their cuts.

Cuts: Johnny Hoogerland grits his teeth in agony after getting tangled in the barbed wire

Wounded: Hoogerland is helped from the fence, and right, Jurgen Van Den Broeck of Belgium receives treatment for an injured collarbone after he crashed in the 9th stage of the race

It emerged that the car driver had been ordered by race control not to pass the riders. The driver and the vehicle have been thrown off the race.

That part of the race had already been littered with broken bones.

A tricky descent on a mountain road made slippery by the rain in the Massif Central caused the earlier carnage with Alexandre Vinokourov from Kazakhstan breaking his right femur after being thrown over a barrier into a tree.

Back in the saddle: Flecha made a recovery to rejoin the race but suffered cuts to his legs

In the same incident, one of the pre-race favourites, Jurgen van den Broeck, fractured ribs and his shoulder blade, while Omega-Lotto team-mate and fellow Belgian Frederik Willems suffered a broken collar bone and David Zabriskie a suspected broken wrist.

Saxobank rider Stuart O'Grady, whose team-mate Nicki Sorensen was clipped by a photographer's motorbike and crashed into a ditch in Brittany on Stage 5, fiercely criticised the Tour organisers.

He said: 'Crashes are always going be part of the game. It just seems that this year we are going down goat tracks.

Casualties: Frederik Willems of Belgium, left, and David Zabriskie of the U.S., right, are treated by doctors after crashing out of the race on a mountain road in the Massif Central

Seeing the sights: The leaders ride past the castle of Alleuze in their breakaway on stage nine

Where's Wally? The tightly-bunched pack climbs on the way to Saint Flour

'It's one thing to say it's all for the spectacle, but we don't want to see more people lose their life.'

While Luis Leon Sanchez won the stage and Thomas Voeckler took over the yellow jersey, seven riders abandoned the race with injuries.

The competition quickly appears to becoming the Tour of attrition.

Katie Holmes looks white hot while promoting her new film Jack and Jill in Mexico

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

New flick: Katie Holmes looked stunning in a white dress as she attended a press event in Cancun, Mexico to promote her new movie Jack and Jill

Katie Holmes appears to have discovered the fountain of youth.

While promoting her new Happy Madison comedy Jack and Jill in Cancun, Mexico today, she looked more like her Dawson's Creek character, Joey Potter, than a married mother.

Laughter must be keeping her young as the actress grinned and was jovial throughout the press trip and looked stunning in her white hot outfit.

Katie, who is married to actor Tom Cruise, looked radiant in a three-quarter sleeved white mini dress.

Fountain of youth: Katie Holmes looks the same as she did while playing Joey Potter in Dawson's Creek

She was certainly all smiles while mugging for the camera with co-star Adam Sandler.
The comedy revolves around the comedian's character, Jack Murray, receiving a visit from his much-loathed twin sister, Jill.

He initially tries to avoid spending time with her, but his wife - played by Holmes - forces them to play nicely and they end up realising how much they actually like one another.

Big grin: Katie Holmes is happy as a clam while attending a press event for her new film, Jack and Jill

Laughter is the best medicine: Katie Holmes and Adam Sandler have a blast promoting their upcoming film Jack and Jill

Sandler, naturally, plays both Jack and Jill and is in drag for much of the movie.
In addition to Sandler's on-set shenanigans, Holmes can credit daughter Suri to the blast she had on set.

During her down time, the actress spent time with her 5-year-old mini-me, taking time to visit a petting zoo and play with rabbits.

Just the three of us: Adam Sandler and Katie Holmes promote their new film, Jack and Jill, with a cardboard cut-out in Cancun

But mum isn't the only person Suri visits on set, Cruise got family visits from his little princess, too.

The little fashionista and her mother most recently visited Tom Cruise on the set of his latest film, Rock of Ages, in Miami.

With Tom, Suri and Adam in her life, it's no wonder Holmes has reason to smile.

After triumphant Swagger Jagger performance at T4 On The Beach, Cher Lloyd goes back to basics with new track Superhero

By SARAH BULL

Triumphant: Cher Lloyd wowed with her performance of new single Swagger Jagger at T4 On The Beach today

Her debut single may have been slated before it has even been released but Cher Lloyd didn't let that stop her performing to the very best of her ability at T4 On The Beach today.

The 17-year-old singer bounded on to the stage in Weston-Super-Mare wearing a tiny pair of black shorts and a skeleton printed T-shirt as she performed Swagger Jagger to the cheering crowd.

Cher's triumphant performance came just hours after she released a video clip of a track called Superhero, believed to be the teenager's next release from her upcoming album.

Excited: Cher looked delighted as she took to the stage

The former X Factor star goes back to basics with the acoustic song, showcasing her talent perfectly as she performs the track while sitting on a bed, with only a guitarist as her musical accompaniment.

The new song could have been prompted by the fact that Cher won huge praise when she belted out Shakespear's Sister hit Stay on The X Factor, with the judges telling her it suited her when she stripped things back and showed off her vulnerability in her music.

Today Cher wowed the crowds at T4 On The Beach with her energetic performance of Swagger Jagger.

She's got some swagger: Cher sang into a fluorescent pink microphone

Showered: Cher was showered with yellow confetti as she performed

Unique: Cher wore a pair of black shorts and a skeleton-print T-shirt for the event

Quirky: Cher teamed her outfit with a pair of bright pink boots

Mount Etna eruption closes airports and 'knocks clocks 15 minutes fast'

Strong: An eruption on Mount Etna spews ash and lava

An eruption by Mount Etna on the Italian island of Sicily left a nearby airport closed and ... locals turning up early for work.

The volcano spewed lava on to its south-eastern slopes on Saturday afternoon and winds swept ash further afield, stopping flights at Catania's Fontanarossa airport.

The strong eruption - Etna's fifth since the beginning of the year - was shortlived, but left the airport closed overnight.

Violent: Mount Etna's latest eruption is the fifth since the beginning of the year

Bemused Sicilians, meanwhile, were quick to blame the volcano after thousands noticed that their clocks were running 15 minutes fast. The fast forward time keeping has affected a wide spectrum of digital clocks and watches - from computers through to alarm clocks.

It was spotted when large numbers of locals started turning up for work early, and a Facebook page was organised for those involved to compare notes.

As well as Etna's volcanic activity, users have so far blamed aliens, poltergeists, solar explosions and electrical disturbances caused by underwater cables.

Fontanarossa airport was reopened at 7am local time after seven sweeping machines worked through the night to clear the runway of ash. The cause of the island-wide clock confusion remains unknown.

Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe at 3,295m (10,810ft). The last eruption was in May.
